PART TWENTY

GENRE, AUDIENCES AND INSTITUTIONS

WHY IS GENRE A RELEVANT CONCEPT FOR AUDIENCES?

Genre is important to film audiences because the audience need to be interested and engaged in the genre in order to watch the film and enjoy it.

HOW DOES GENRE AFFECT FILM PRODUCTION COMPANIES (THE COMPANIES THAT MAKE THE MOVIE)?

When the production companies are marketing and studying cinema, it is important for them to know who the intended audience are so that it engages them and helps them to relate to certain producers so that forthcoming movies will be successful as the audience will be interested in them after seeing the previous one.

WHY IS THE GENRE USEFUL FOR FILM DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES (THE COMPANIES THAT MARKET AND ADVERTISE FILMS)

The distributor charges a distribution fee so it is very important to choose the distributor who is the most suitable for your specific genre. Movie makers need to study each platform in order to find the demographic that will be most receptive to their movie, for example, "On Demand", the audience is typically more female-skewed and a bit older, so films that can be marketed as more of a thriller than a hardcore horror film will perform better for this distributor. Whereas, "Digital HD", skews younger and is more likely to do a lot better with R-rated horror especially platforms/distributors such as Xbox.

PART NINETEEN

Gathering Ideas For Thriller Opening Scene

This short clip from the movie "RAIN FOR MORGAN" gave us, as a group, inspiration for our opening scene. This beautifully serene yet eery image of a woman drowning creates an atmosphere of serenity and mystery for the audience. Mystery is one of the things which my group and I are hoping to achieve in our own short clip of a woman committing suicide.

This lake photo is ideally the sort of set we are hoping for as the campers arrive and set up their tents.

Genre Difference, Repetition and Similarity

PART EIGHTEEN

THRILLERS

The Thriller genre is different from most other genres because on the surface many of them look entirely different from each other.

FOR EXAMPLE:

 Saw 1 & Sherlock Holmes

With a dead body lying between them, two men wake up in the secure lair of a serial killer who's been nicknamed "Jigsaw". The men must follow various rules and objectives if they wish to survive and win the deadly game set for them. (103 mins.)
Director: James Wan

In this example, the two characters appear to have swapped places when the 180 degree line is crossed.
