PART THIRTY

CHARACTERS

We are looking into the appearance of our characters to make the casting a quicker and easier process as we will know roughly what we are looking for.

Evangeline  (young)

Evangeline (old)

Feedback on our thriller idea

PART TWENTY NINE

Feedback

  • Rather than shooting some shots of the mother from foot-first on, the majority of the bath shots will be taken from the daughters perspective through the keyhole.  The angle of the bath will look like this:

and the outlines of the keyhole will look like this:

  • We also found out that it is not possible to shoot at Leathhill Place anymore so we are looking for a suitable location around Surrey. We are looking for a large old Victorian home in which a we will shoot the daughter walking up the stairs to see her mother. The only spaces which are going to be shot in are the hallway, the staircase and the bathroom. We are looking to shoot somewhere like this:

  • Originally, there were going to be a few shots of the daughter walking around the house calling her mother's name. This proves to be a bit repetitive and tedious, so, we will have the opening shot as Evangeline (the daughter) walking up the stairs on to the landing. She will stand there and hear running water. In the next shot she will walk to the bathroom door and look through the keyhole. This is how our first few shots will look.

  • The feedback team told us that it is very unlikely someone could or would drown themselves in a bath. So, the woman, (Evangeline's mother) will slit her wrists first and let the blood run into the water. The girl will then open the door slightly to reveal a shot similar to this:

PART TWENTY SEVEN

For the first half of the shots for the thriller, It shows a flashback where Evangeline is seen as a young girl looking for her mother and climbing the staircase. Meanwhile, her mother is upstairs drowning herself in a bathtub. Evangeline looks through the keyhole to see her dead mother and starts screaming. Her brother Michael comes up behind her to restrain her and starts shouting 'Evangeline stop stop'. For this scene we need to shoot in a grande house to make it seem believable that the little girl wouldn't have been able to find her mother. The big house we are thinking of using is :
Leathhill Place

What kind of institution would produce your film?

PART TWENTY SIX

What kind of institution would produce your film?

I have chosen two different institutions to produce my thriller film:

And

BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS would wish to make my film because they specialize in horror, drama and thriller movies, such as; The purge, Paranormal activity, The normal heart ect. They are partners with Universal Pictures, making them incredibly popular. They focus on producing movies which are dark and tense. This, I would say, completely incaptures the mood of my thriller. Blumhouse Productions have pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking- producing high-quality micro-budget films. Initially, this concept supports our idea because we would eventually ideally like to make our thriller based on a small and affordable budget but then incapture the dramatic moments within it in detail, which is what Blumhouse Productions does.

COFFEE FILMS would wish to make my film because stylistically their films have ranged from experimental to arthouse, thriller, documentary, black comedy and drama. Much of their work has settled into exploring the dark, alternative and creative side of humanity, as well as the occasional foray into the beauty of the natural world it exists within. In the immediate future their slate is targeted in three primary areas of drama/thriller. My thriller depicts a female character, who is emotionally unstable, drowning herself in a bathtub. This, to me, is relevant to the type of dark side of humanity coffee films wish to explore. Additionally, They are a small independent company based in the UK so would be a perfect institution to target in terms of gaining approval as they specialize in small and low-budget productions.

BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS have produced many films in a similar vein to me. is particularly influential to my thriller, it is where part of my inspiration came from. It is still a very recent film, only being aired in cinemas on
November 7, 2014. There is a scene towards the end where Jessabelle, the main character, is lying in a bath, there is a shot of the tap dripping and then a shot of her in the bath from head on.

This is very similar to Evangeline, our thriller. Although Jessabelle is a horror movie and Evangeline is a thriller, they share many similar aspects, including; camera angles and shots, characters, mood, ect. Here is a clip of the trailer:

Pilot thriller footage evaluation

PART TWENTY FIVE

EVALUATION OF OUR TEST FOOTAGE

We filmed 8 shots for this pilot.

SHOT ONE: Close up shot of young girl's eye as she looks through the keyhole of the bathroom door.
SHOT TWO: Close up shot of dripping tap in the bathroom.
SHOT THREE: Mid angle shot from bathroom showing the mother in the bath.

SHOT FOUR : High angle shot from bathroom showing the mother crying in the bath.

SHOT FIVE: Mid shot from behind showing the young girl looking through the bathroom door keyhole.

SHOT SIX: Close up shot from side profile of the young girl looking through the bathroom door keyhole.

SHOT SEVEN: Close up shot of drowning woman's hand, limp in the water.

SHOT EIGHT: Long shot through the keyhole from the young girl's perspective of the woman dead in the bath.

  • We filmed these shots to give us a rough idea of the mood of the thriller opening sequence we'd like to film.
  • We had to use a shower instead of a bath as we were shooting at school not in a studio.
  • We also used a sink to show the running water in shots seven and two.
  • We tested out different camera angles to see what worked and what didn't in regards to perspective.
  • Rebecca, the other member of my group, and I found these shots very useful and we now have an idea of which shots we are going to keep and use in our real opening sequence.
  • I think the order of the shots and the transitions of them will change but they portray the sort of eeriness that we want to keep.

Evangeline pilot shot preview

  PART TWENTY FOUR

Evangeline - Pilot

We filmed this on a flip-cam in order to grasp a sense of what our final shot sequence might look like.
A pilot program, also called a feasibility study or experimental trial, is a small-scale experiment that helps an organization learn how a large-scale project might work in practice.
We used in-camera editing, a process where you film the sequence shots in the order of which you want them to appear when watched back. This saved us a lot of time because we didn't have to use an editing software on a computer. We did, however, put some music in the background of this clip to give ourselves and the audience an insight into what the mood might be.
This is a useful planning exercise as it shows the cameramen (us) a rough idea of what we want the final shots to look like.
